But since the ring was going to take some time to complete, the jeweler lent the bride-to-be a substitute sparkler to wear at her impromptu engagement party. “It was a great big, gaudy fake diamond that he'd put together so I would have something to show off to my friends and family,” remembers Gaines. “Of course they were all taken aback by the size of my 'diamond.' It's funny to me that, even way back then, they all seemed to realize that a flashy ring just wasn't my style. They expected to see me wearing something a little subtler, a little smaller, a little more classic maybe.” A.K.A exactly like the beautiful bauble Gaines ended up with! “We strung them along for a good long while, and we all had a good laugh when Chip finally revealed that the ring was fake,” said Gaines, but 12 years later this lucky lady actually got the opportunity to sport a sparkler similar to her 'fake-out ring.'

When Chip planned his proposal to Joanna about a year after they started dating, he told her they were going to a private concert four hours away. Instead of taking her to a venue, he took her to a shopping center near where his parents grew up, where he got down on one knee to propose. It turned out they were in the shopping center to visit a jewelry store owned by jeweler Billy Holder, who Chip’s dad knew from high school, where Joanna could design her engagement ring. Joanna shares the story of the ring in the couple’s new book, The Magnolia Story.

On their anniversary over a decade later, Gaines found that exact same jeweler sitting on her porch with a black velvet tray of dazzling diamonds. “'Chip wants you to upgrade,' he said to me.” Ummm, can we just interject here to state that this is our dream scenario?! But as it turns out, it wasn't Gaines'. “I looked him in the eye, and I said, 'I'm sorry, but no. This is the original diamond I picked, and it's perfect just the way it is.'” We can't even fault her for turning down a megawatt ring, because that sentiment is just too darn sweet!

“Wearing a ring symbolizes our love, but to me that love is not just represented by the original ring,” she said. “When we go on vacation, I sometimes just wear a cheap band. I want to wear a wedding ring, but to me it doesn’t need to just be one ring.”

“Since when did the size of someone’s ring become an indication of success?!” Rachel Pederson of Eden Prairie wrote. “For me, the ring is so much more. My ring symbolizes a whirlwind, storybook, ‘make you sick’ love story.” Five wedding ring trends While classics, such as a single solitaire, will always remain in style, there’s no reason you can’t explore other options. The jeweler mentioned he would need some time to create the custom piece, so he let Gaines leave with a big, glitzy, fake diamond. The newly engaged couple then went off to celebrate the good news with family and friends, but no one was fooled by the temporary bauble.

“We seem to give each other energy,” Joanna wrote in the book. “We function better together than we do apart, and I don’t think either one of us has ever felt the urge to say, ‘I need a break from you.’ Don’t get me wrong, we’ve certainly had our share of disappointments and arguments, but we just always wanted to tackle our issues together.”

She continued, “It wasn’t a ‘perfect’ diamond, but it was perfect for me. I felt bad that Billy wasn’t going to make the big sale he was hoping for that day, but I don’t ever want to replace that diamond or that ring. To me, my ring is part of our story.”

I was able to pick out a nice round diamond and a beautiful, antique-looking platinum setting. I had a blast sitting there with Billy, designing the perfect ring. Chip just sat there, patiently observing every second of it. After we finished designing, Billy said he would need some time to work on the ring, so he gave me a substitute to wear for the time being, just for fun. It was a great big, gaudy fake diamond that he’d put together so I would have something to show off to my friends and family.
